Pinball maintenance: the basics
A well-maintained pinball plays better and breaks down less. The simple jobs to do yourself, and when to call a repairer.
Regularly
Clean the playfield with a suitable product (never alcohol or abrasives) and playfield wax. Clean or replace the ball: a scratched ball damages the playfield.
Check the rubbers: they dry out and break over time. A new rubber kit transforms the game.
Replace blown bulbs; LED bulbs run cooler and use less power.
Every year or after heavy use
Check flipper wear: play in the shafts, worn sleeves, tired springs. Rebuild kits exist for most machines.
On solid-state and DMD machines, have the backup batteries removed from the CPU board and a remote holder fitted: battery leaks destroy boards.
Check the fuses: always replace with the rating given in the manual, never higher.
When to call a professional
Burning smell, a fuse that blows again, a coil that stays on, a power supply or circuit board fault: switch everything off and call a repairer.
Voltages inside a machine are dangerous, especially around the power supply and display. If in doubt, unplug it and ask for advice on the CLIKBIL help forum or from a repairer in your area.
